Matthew 7:24-29 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice<span class="crossreference" style="font-size: 0.65em; font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;" value="(B)”> is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
When Jesus had finished saying these things,<span class="crossreference" style="font-size: 0.65em; font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;" value="(C)”> the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Most of us who have been in church for any length of time have heard this story. It is one of those short stories that is packed with Truth that will change our lives if we will heed the message. We must ask ourselves, “What is my life built on rock or sand?” A huge rock will stand without moving. Sand, on the other hand is easily moved.
The words of JESUS are rock because he is the Rock. His words are Truth and can be trusted to be a sure foundation for our lives. Any part of our lives where His words– teachings– are being adhered to will be a place where we will not fall when troubles and trials come. Our foundation will keep us during those storms of life. And we all know storms are sure to come! When they come our foundation will determine how we come out— still standing or in rubble.
Sometimes we think we are on the Rock until storms blow in. That’s because sand is bits and pieces of rock. So many Christians today don’t understand why when trouble comes they aren’t able to stand. Many times it’s because they have sand instead of rock. They have some teaching but lack the whole counsel JESUS gives.
These are JESUS’ own words here in Matthew (Luke 6:47-49) and He says if we put His words into practice we will not fall. His words are Truth. But our own compromise will cause the rock to begin to break apart and no longer support us. We must stand on JESUS words, which is all His teachings. When we do we can rest in complete assurance that no matter how rough the storm we will still be standing when it’s over because JESUS said– and His Words never fail!
