The description Jesus gave of our relationship with Father and Holy Spirit is one of intimacy and unity. Both of these relationships flow through Jesus as referenced in John 14:6, “……. no one comes to the Father except through Me.” And when explaining about Holy Spirit He says in verse 18, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
Holy Spirit will be in us (V.17) and the Father will make His home with us (V.23). This denotes intimacy, someone you have freedom to be yourself around. We are usually closest to those we live with and because they accept us we can let our guards down with them. There is security in being at home. I feel that is something Jesus was trying to convey to His disciples. He was in essence saying, “They will be there all the time for you, so you can be secure with no worries.” I think it was significant that Jesus started out with, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God”. Just as He had been with His disciples three years, now the Father and Holy Spirit were going to be with them but in an even closer and better way since there would be no parting of ways even for a moment.
In a home there must be order so that the family members feel secure. Love and obedience were mentioned several times and are the sign posts for God’s Home. The two are inseparable. The true test of love is obedience, which in verse 31 Jesus says, “He does exactly as His father commands.” Holy Spirit is to help with the obedience in that He leads us into Truth because He is the Spirit of Truth (V.16) and he teaches and reminds us of Jesus’ words (V.36). The words they (Jesus and Holy Spirit) speak are from the Father (V.24). This again points to their unity and intimacy. You can do what someone tells you to without being submitted to them. But, when there is love you can submit with the right heart because you know the other person has only your best interest in mind. (This does not mean everything is always on the mountain. It does mean God has a plan to grow you in everything He allows your way.) Jesus understood this and wanted His disciples to understand as well. He gave a very important clue, I think, to walking in victory against the enemy which is to walk in intimacy with the Father by loving Him and being obedient. Jesus was clear, “The prince of this world is coming” (V.30-31) But the enemy had no hold on Jesus because He loved the Father and was obedient. The Holy Spirit, our Counselor,(V.15) helps us to understand how to and reminds us to be obedient.
When we stay in unity and intimacy our relationship with the Father and Holy Spirit flourishes.
