How Big is Your Cup?

“Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:35-38

I’m sure most of us have heard this verse used during offering time or to spur us to give money at one time or other. We may have even used it to encourage others in their giving, reminding them how if they give they will receive in return blessings overflowing. There is truth in that because it is true that we can never out give God. But, in this passage, the giving of money or possessions is not what is being discussed.

In the same paragraph, is verse 37, which says, “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.” Therefore, what is being discussed here is the same measuring cup you use to judge people will also be used to judge you. The measuring cup you use to condemn others will be used to condemn you. If you don’t forgive you will not be forgiven.  So, how big is your measuring cup?

“Judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:13 Did you get that?? Mercy triumphs over judgment! The word triumph means a great victory. When we show mercy we reap a great victory!

Matthew 6:15 says, “But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Those are Jesus very words and they are to the point— if we don’t forgive we will not be forgiven. But the good news is if we forgive others we too will be forgiven!

Just in case anyone is wondering– I do still believe that sin is sin and the wages of sin always lead to death just as the Bible states. Repeatedly I am instructed to love and love always speaks the truth even when it’s hard. But the only one with the job to convict of sin is Holy Spirit.
