If you’ve been in church very long you have probably heard mentioned that Jesus has won the victory and our part is to surrender our lives to Him. Recently, I was asked what exactly does it mean to surrender to God? Surrender is not something that just naturally flows from us nor is it something we offhandedly do with no thought directed towards it. With surrender, we decide to abide by the wisdom and revelation the Holy Spirit imparts to us. Surrender is not a “one” thing we do— it is a thousand things we do, a continual dying to the soul so we live from our spirit. It is not that we ignore our mind, will or emotions (soul). God created us with those things but they are to be governed by our spirit. When our soul is surrendered in discipline then we are most joyful and peaceful. Surrender is obedience in the little things and in the big things. It is a life determined to live sold out to the Spirit of God, no matter the cost. It is a willingness to be crushed, if need be, so Christ can be glorified.
