Have you ever thought about what John 6:53 means? It is one of those sayings of Jesus that seemed to offend people. It does sound strange. “So Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly I say to you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood you have no life in you.’”
Jesus seems to be pretty to the point; this is what you do if you want life. We all desire life but sometimes fail to understand the proper pathway to peace and joy.
To drink Jesus’ blood means we take His blood inside us to cleanse us from sin. (1 John1:7) “The wages or payment of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23). Repenting of sin quickly keeps death from settling in. In a sense, we drink His blood (repent), and sin is cleansed from us.
We hear—you are what you eat. It is also true you are what you meditate on, as this is how we digest things inside of us.
We eat His flesh by meditating on Jesus, His nature, and the truths found in God’s word (John 1:1). We choose to die to our selfish nature while asking for grace to exhibit Jesus’ nature.
We may like chips and snacks because they taste good. However, we all know they have little if any nutritional value. Too much of them and our health will reflect the fact they aren’t good for us. If we desire the life Jesus talks about in John 6:53, we must meditate on things conducive to this kind of life.
Recently I found myself complaining. It felt good to voice my complaints to my husband. It was easy to think about all my complaints. But then, Holy Spirit convicted me, stopping me in my tracks. My thoughts and words were not nurturing the nature of Jesus bringing the life He talked about in John 6:53. As good as it felt to complain, it was fostering death!
I made up my mind that day not to even tolerate complaining in my thoughts. When the ideas come, I say, “No, I’m not in agreement with that.” And I look for something to be grateful for to foster life instead of death.
The life Jesus is talking about in this passage of scripture is the God kind of life. It’s the life everyone wants. Jesus said unless we drink His blood (repent) and eat His flesh (meditate on His Truth), we won’t have this life. He is the only way to have true life!
We are what we eat. I couldn’t eat complaining, and have the God kind of life.
We can all look at our lives and notice areas we don’t have the God kind of life. We can ask Holy Spirit to help us and give us the grace to overcome so the God kind of life can reign. We die to our selfish nature, which may feel good at the moment, and embrace Christ’s God kind of life, which is good, the absolute BEST!.
